Martin O’Neil reminded us about Nithsdale Regatta 2018 the day before. I documented the local crews from Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club racing other clubs across Scotland and North England in April 2015 but the event date (and month) kept changing and I hadn’t a chance to revisit the Greensands in the subsequent years.
As we knew the date for sure this time John and I decided to spend a couple of fun and relaxing hours outdoors, on the banks of the river Nith, amidst fans, dog walkers and other photographers.
Of course, these hours were that relaxing for us, the onlookers. The rowers were battling it out on water since 8 am till 6 pm. 10 clubs competing in 123 races, 113 medals to win!
I used my camera to document just a fragment of this annual regatta, to celebrate sportsmanship and the incredible tenacity these rowers of all ages and gender exhibited, and the house officials who did everything possible to run this massive competition smoothly.
As always, it was amazing to observe the easy camaraderie the crews shared and their enjoyment of their sport!

John was impressed how the crew stays together even at rest, all huddled in one truck
Waterloo Sunset was a giant puppet theatre piece for kids created by Jack Finlay and the team of the Electric Theatre Workshop as part of Dumfries bicentenary celebrations of the battle of Waterloo victory over Napoleon. Before I saw the play I wondered how the puppet theatre would be used to present a tale…
Of the two of us, it’s I, due to my art history degree, that is more likely to tiptoe around a pile of bricks at the Tate Modern and believe the sign saying that it is the greatest work of art of all times. So, when I read out from…
Being in the middle of a photo editing marathon I couldn’t enjoy Dumfries’ spectacular Guid Nychburris 2016 pageant and parade this year. However, I made it to Norwegian Market in the Square event organised by the Stove art network. The market, complete with its own cute pedal-driven travelling food stall,…
It’s the first shoot for Urban Portraits Dumfries project – and an exciting challenge. Moxie, the Herald at the Stove, responded to my open call for volunteer models and enlisted her family of 5 to be photographed after hours when most of High Street shops were closed. We had a phone consultation…
Dumfries Music Conference has turned into one of the main music industry events for young Dumfries and Galloway performers, with workshops, live music opportunities, an exhibition, special invited guests and of course Radio DMC. This is the second time Radio DMC live broadcast showcasing young local music talent was run…
My first photographs taken at Kingholm Quay in Dumfries, about 500 yards from our house, will give you an idea where we live now. It was only several days after River Nith flooded the bottom of the road, so the wonderful expanse of marshland grass where the locals walked their…
