John was reading Dumfries and Galloway Standard yesterday and came across an article about Doon Toon Army’s first meet and clean action with my photos documenting this important event for Dumfries community activism.

Just last month we celebrated the launch of Midsteeple Quarter Community Society where Doonhamers pledged their willingness to invest their time and effort into changing the face of Dumfries High Street.

I was pleased to see this willingness put to the test when Doon Toon Army gathered for the first ever street cleanup action. About thirty local people, including kids of all ages and their parents, artists and members of community organisations, and even MSP Colin Smith and Councillor Ronnie Nicholson, turned up ready to tackle rubbish and grime!

After a brief health and safety instruction by Kevin Reid, Creative Producer for the Midsteeple Quarter Project, and a skill check outside at the Stove all volunteers went out to scrub, sweep, wash, paint and pick litter to bring practical change to town. Not just words – action!

These practical clean up meetings are planned to take place on a regular basis and members of the public and organisations are invited to join Doon Toon Army community movement.
