Guid Nychburris Parade 2017

Another year has passed – and the traditional Guid Nychburris parade, part of an annual Dumfries festival has happens on the third Saturday of June, triumphantly returned to the town streets. Forty nine entries took part in the parade this year contributing to one of the most photogenic events on Dumfries civic calendar.

I was particularly impressed with the colourful mini Beatles float and the tenacity of Disney characters of Summerhill Community Centre (it was a hot sunny day to wear those costumes!). Five bands played Scottish tunes. Most loved locally Blood Bikes took a ride in the procession, as well as rare cars and vintage agricultural machinery.

Tesco delivery truck people generously shared fruit and drink with the public and participants throughout the whole afternoon. The old Western bus brought back nostalgic memories in some onlookers. Thousands of Doonhamers took to the street to clap and cheer their favourites. So much community spirit and eccentric creativity were on show!

I was looking for clean simplicity for my images. I found it in the repetitive vertical shafts of dried heathers standing proud along the riverbank, in…
