Martin O’Neil reminded us about Nithsdale Regatta 2018 the day before. I documented the local crews from Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club racing other clubs across Scotland and North England in April 2015 but the event date (and month) kept changing and I hadn’t a chance to revisit the Greensands in the subsequent years.
As we knew the date for sure this time John and I decided to spend a couple of fun and relaxing hours outdoors, on the banks of the river Nith, amidst fans, dog walkers and other photographers.
Of course, these hours were that relaxing for us, the onlookers. The rowers were battling it out on water since 8 am till 6 pm. 10 clubs competing in 123 races, 113 medals to win!
I used my camera to document just a fragment of this annual regatta, to celebrate sportsmanship and the incredible tenacity these rowers of all ages and gender exhibited, and the house officials who did everything possible to run this massive competition smoothly.
As always, it was amazing to observe the easy camaraderie the crews shared and their enjoyment of their sport!

As always, no duck was harmed- this duck family swims along quite happily not minding the regatta
Synchronicity with which the crew members move as they carry the boat is amazing!

John was impressed how the crew stays together even at rest, all huddled in one truck
My congratulations to Lincluden community, whose beautiful heritage of Lincluden Collegiate Church has been voted one of six Hidden Gems of Scotland! It was a result of two months of online Facebook voting organised by Dig It! 2017 that worked with partners across Scotland to unearth special places that are…
D-LUX illuminations brought a breath of fresh air into Doonhamers’ traditional Robert Burns’ birthday street celebrations in 2018. This year’s lantern procession was a much scaled down version of the previous street extravaganzas orchestrated by Big Burns Supper crew, with their huge moving puppet platforms and 3,000 strong lantern carriers that I…
If you were in the town centre recently and saw a strange bunch of people walking under the rain inside a rubber band and wearing periscope construction helmets, please don’t doubt your sanity. It was all part of the participatory Close Encounters walk run by the Stove artist network! Close…
Capturing an outdoor interactive performance by Dumfries Youth Theatre at Portrack Gardens Open Day. Cosmic faeries arrive from the Moon to quiz the young humans about environmental issues, sing, dance and frolic with the visitors.
On a sunny afternoon, armed with a telephoto zoom not to disturb the game, I went to Dock Park to document some families playing crazy golf. Dock Park, developed at the end of the nineteenth century, epitomises the Victorian idea of green spaces in urban centres where people of all…
Nithraid 2014 is a return of a fun and spirited public celebration of the River Nith crossing Dumfries. Masterminded and organised by The Stove artists’ collective, this year’s Nithraid is bigger and more eventful and colourful. Some 5000 spectators lined the riverbanks on September 13 to see the Salty Coo parade, BMX…
