The festive auburn-yellow dress on the Autumn Spire Rowan tree opposite the Starbucks caught my attention when I found myself wandering through Dumfries town centre early in the morning. All Glasgow trains were temporarily substituted with buses due to some railway failure and I decided to postpone the trip until the next day.
Two guys sat on the bench nearby waiting for some shop to open. They eyed my camera exercises around this tree with mild curiosity, not seeing what I was seeing – the ‘Autumn Spire’ against the spire of Greyfriars Kirk, the tree’s autumnal glory echoing the brick tints of the church. The contrast between the mustard yellow Rowan berries against the clear morning sky. The golden light shaping the rounded fruit. The repetition of bright pink-red leaves. The plentiful bounty of nature, right there, in the middle of the town…
