Video location recce for autumn portraits in Crichton

The Crichton grounds are in many ways one of significant sites in the history of Dumfries and Scotland.

It was once the place for the grandest of Scotland’s lunatic asylums, known for the innovative occupational and art psychiatric therapies, as well as its architecture and landscaped gardens.

It is now home for a cluster of educational and research institutions, such as University of West Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway College and the Crichton Carbon Centre.

John used to work in the branch of the University of Glasgow, also on Crichton grounds, and we both enjoyed the architecture and music shows in Easterbrook Hall and concerts in Crichton memorial Church.

Crichton rock garden is stunning and the scenery is particularly pretty in autumn, with so many varying shades of foliage on show. I love wandering there in the afternoon and had a lot of fun photographing many endemic and exotic plants.

I thought that it will be appropriate to stage an autumn portrait session with Liv for my project on Crichton grounds as a gesture of appreciation for this enchanting place.

Below is a short video I created out of the footage I took while on location recce in advance of the shoot:

The festive auburn-yellow dress on the Autumn Spire Rowan tree opposite the Starbucks caught my attention when I found myself wandering through Dumfries town centre early in the morning. So far it was raining almost every day in Dumfries since our move. First it was floods, then stormy winds, then hale, then persistent rain, day and night. For the past few days (not today though – it’s a drizzly day through and through) there have been some sunny spells…

  • Kingholm Quay winter sunset photography
