I love taking lifestyle family portraits – carefree and fun, always taken on location, they capture the spirit of the family photographed and a range of genuine expressions and interactions. And they are an epitome of good life.
The dictionary definition of a ‘lifestyle’ is ‘a way of life that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group’. So not only it describes the typical way a person or family goes about daily living, but it encompasses emotional connotations, more and more often positive ones – unique, desirable, happy, healthy and empowered.
Lifestyle portraits are NOT documentary images in the purest sense as the scene set, time of the day, outfits and props are chosen for the most photogenic results. Also some gentle on-location directing is involved. However, family activities in a natural and familiar environment provoke natural smiles and giggles, not manufactured emotions. In this sense lifestyle family portraits are very authentic.
All props, like a bike and a trampoline in this featured session I took in Norfolk, belong to the family, are regularly used in everyday life and MEAN something to my subjects. The feel is relaxed prompting for casual clothes. The rapeseed field just behind the cottage where they live is used as a seasonal countryside location which dramatically combines the blues of the sky and the bright yellows of the flowers to show off a family at ease. The family in landscape images promote a feeling of well being. They always bring back happy memories and look best as large-scale wall art pieces in a living room or a dining room.
The long rapeseed stems are perfect for children playing hide-and-seek games with the camera. Parent and child closeups emphasise love, trust and intimacy. These photos will definitely become special heirlooms for both siblings when they grow older.
The green grass of a shaded back garden lawn makes a simple but pretty backdrop for lifestyle family portraits as well.
Warm sunset hues and flare add drama and exuberance to this parting jumping shot!
